Have You Taken the First Abortion Pill and Are Now Having Second Thoughts?

If you’ve taken the first dose of the abortion pill (mifepristone) and are now experiencing regret or uncertainty, you're not alone. Many women have felt this way, and it's okay to take time to process what you're going through.

In this post, we’ll walk through your potential options if you’re hoping to continue your pregnancy after taking mifepristone.

Note: This post is intended for informational purposes only and is not medical advice. For your safety, please speak with a medical professional as soon as possible.

What Are Your Options After Taking Mifepristone?

If you’ve taken the first abortion pill and have changed your mind, there are two primary options that may be available to you:

If you have taken the first abortion pill (mifepristone) and have changed your mind, you have two options:

Option One: Don’t Take the Second Dose
The abortion pill process involves two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. If you have taken mifepristone but have not yet taken misoprostol, you can choose to stop the process.

Some pregnancies have continued after taking mifepristone alone, although there are risks and no guarantees. If you are considering continuing your pregnancy, contact a doctor as soon as possible and schedule an ultrasound to check the viability and health of the pregnancy.

Option Two: Explore Abortion Pill Reversal (APR)
Is it really possible to reverse the abortion pill? Not exactly. The abortion cannot be reversed, but it may be possible to counteract the effects of mifepristone if action is taken quickly.

Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) is a protocol in which a medical provider prescribes high-dose progesterone, a natural hormone that supports pregnancy. This treatment aims to offset the effects of mifepristone.

According to the Abortion Pill Rescue Network, there have been successful cases of continued pregnancies when APR is started within 72 hours of taking mifepristone. However, the protocol is not FDA-approved, and it is only available through certain medical providers.

If you're considering this option, contact a provider immediately. Time is critical.

Your Health and Safety Come First
Whatever you decide to do, it’s important to do so under the supervision of a trusted medical professional. Attempting to navigate this process alone could put your health at risk.

We know this may be one of the hardest decisions you’ve ever faced. You deserve support, compassion, and clear information without pressure.

You're Not Alone

If you’ve taken the first abortion pill and are now questioning your decision, don’t wait. Contact a medical professional as soon as possible to discuss your options and ensure your health and safety.

If you also need emotional support, information, or a safe space to talk through what you're feeling, a trusted pregnancy support center can help walk with you through the process.

You are strong. Your feelings are valid. Your life and your future matter. Whatever you're walking through, you don't have to walk through it alone.
